Computer have brought revolution in the field of education.Computers are used as teaching and learning aids by teachers and students.Students can use self learning programs to learn various subjects.The use of computer has popularized the concept of open universities .Through diatant learning students can get university degrees on-line,sitting infront of computer at their home.

            The major technologies which help to disseminate knowledge to the students in the classroom environment are:Computer Assisted Instruction(CAI)or Computer Assisted Learning (CAL).

           

The types of activities involved in CAI/CAL are:

a)      Instructional game approach:-

Here,the contents of particular subject are presented in the form of game so that they are effective.

b)      Drill and practical mode:-

Here,the students’s knowledge of previously taught subjects is tested through quizzes and tests ,Graphics and diagrams are imbedded in the programs.

c)      Tutorial mode:-

Here,there ae different level of lessons.Students can go to higher level of lessons only passing through lower level of lessons.

d)      Simulation:-

CAI helps to visualize the complex objects such as human anatomy,complex geometrical objects etc.through simulation .Launching of rockets to the moon can be presented through real simulations.

            Some of the example of commonly used CAI/CAL software are:

i)                    Typing Tutor:- It is a self learning computer programs for typing.This software

package helps to practice the keyboard typing for different level of users.The performance of the typing is also evaluated.

ii)                   Mouse Tutor:- This is the computer programs for learning the use of mouse.This program is embedded within windows.

iii)                 Orbit:-It is the software package for the visualization of the working of the solar systems

iv)                 How Body Works:-This software package helps to learn the anatomy of the human body.

v)                  Encyclopedia:-This software package provides a lot of information on various topics such as country,language,history,science,mathematics etc.
