TYPES OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM



Types of Operating System:-

                       Several types of operating systems are developed till date.Different types of operating systems are available for different brand of computer,defferent working environment and different type of work .Some operating systems works on network environment but other are standalone.Some general type of operating system are given below.

UNIX:

                       It is multiuser,multitasking operating system for PC’s It has several versions with both GUI and CUI interface.

DOS:
                       It is single user OS that supports only 640 KB of memory.It has command line user interface.It is used IBM and IBM compatibles PC’s

LINUX:-
                       It is a clone of UNIX.Its some versions are freely available .It is multitasking multiuser system.It also supports networks envirounment .It has GUI interface.

WINDOWS:-
                       It is GUI based operating system developed by Microsoft .It has several versions that run on different environments.

OS/2:-

                       GUI based operating system developed by IBM for inter PCs.It is multiuser,multitasking operating system with network supper.

                       The multitasking operating system can do multiple task at a time to improve the performance of the system .The GUI based operating systems are easy to use than the CUI based operating system .The operating system with the networking feature are useful for the network environment.

Single User and Muti User:-

                       Single user operating system is the operating system which allows only one user to operate on the computer .DOS (DISK OPERATING SYSTEM)is and example of single user operating system.
                       Multi-user-operating system allows more than one users to log-on to the system .Users can logon to the multiuser operating system .Users can log on to the multiuser operating system simultaneously from network or can use the same system at different times.Linux,Windows NT,Windows- XP,Windows Server 2003 etc are some example of multi-user operating systems.
